Chapter Six

Asher

I had nightmares at least once a night, but last night I didn't have any…not a single one. And I was pretty sure it had to do with the fact I got to hold a girl I'd never thought I would be able to in my arms.

Last night we all passed out on the couch. Harper let me spoon her while she faced Micah and he stroked her hair while she slept.

When her breaths evened out and she was genuinely asleep, Micah looked over her head at me and whispered, "I'm in love with her."

I already knew this. I'd known Micah had been in love with her since college. I'd be lying if I didn't say I had feelings for her too. But Micah was my best friend, he deserved happiness. She'd be better off with him anyways.

"I know you do, man. You should make your move. I know she'd say yes and you deserve to be happy."

I realized I would probably be alone; I was too damaged for anyone to love. So, if all I got was to hold Harper this one time, I would savor every moment.

"You love her too."

Micah didn't say it in a question, more like he'd wanted me to confirm what he already knew. I didn't have the words to respond because saying them out loud and not being unable to have her would be the worst feeling. So, I just nodded yes.

"Asher, you know you deserve happiness too."

I shrugged. Debatable.

Micah brushed some of Harper's copper hair away from her face, tucking it behind her ear. I noticed he did that a lot. "You know…" He paused dramatically, glancing at the beautiful creature between us before continuing, "She loves both of us. And I would never stand in the way of her happiness or yours. Which is why I think we should both be with her. And I’m not talking about what we just did. I’m talking about full on relationship."

Harper stirred in my arms momentarily, and Micah cuddled closer to whisper, "Shhh, baby. Go back to sleep." He kissed her forehead and she draped a leg over his waist, she was truly sandwiched between us now. One of my hands rested on her hip; she reached for it, pulling it up to her chest. This action caused me to snuggle closer to her back, breathing in her vanilla scent.

"She needs you just as much as you need her, Asher."

We stayed quiet for a few moments and listened to the soft breathing of the angel between us. "You're right. I want to be with her. I want to be happy. I want you to be happy. But most of all, I want her to be happy." I kissed her shoulder and looked over at Micah. "Okay, I'm in. If she'll have me."

The biggest smile stretched across Micah's face. You'd think he'd be jealous or possessive, trying to pull the love of his life away from me, not offering to share her. I would have thought I'd felt jealous seeing her wrapped in his arms too, but I didn't.
